Software Engineer - Backend

Remote

We're developing Turn, the product that allows social impact organisations to have private, personal, guided conversations that change behaviour at scale.

Turn is a web application that makes it easy for social impact organisations to:

  • Learn from the world’s best chat-for-impact services
  • Setup and run a chat-for-impact service themselves
  • Track the impact of their chat service in real-time

We work with small and large non-profits, social enterprises and governments who are all trying to change the world for the better, using our product. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Turn delivered a combined total of 60 million messages to over 15 million people through WHO HealthAlert to provide people with instant and easily access to the most accurate and up-to-date information shared by their governments and health organisations.

Our team is growing and we’re looking for an additional Software Engineer to help us shape and build the solid foundations for the product to grow and deliver on our behaviour change goals. In the past year, our team have loved seeing their work immediately being used in high-impact services. Examples are adding support for WhatsApp’s quick reply buttons, expanding the insights & impact tracking features, and automating our infrastructure provisioning for ad-hoc WhatsApp load tests ensure we are the best in class in terms of performance and social impact.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll work directly with the core team to:

  • Implement and maintain the backend APIs that facilitate realtime access to the WhatsApp Business API
  • Maintain the current GraphQL backend data sources, subscriptions, and resolvers which powers the React based frontend
  • Collaborate closely with frontend developers to anticipate, design, and implement backend features and systems to support Turn’s frontend applications
  • Collaborate closely with data scientists to anticipate, design, and implement backend features and systems to support the natural language and machine learning features of Turn
  • Surface and monitor key application performance indicators
  • Proactively contribute to Turn’s long-term vision for core technologies and architecture and advise on and/or contribute to new or emerging technologies that might be relevant to Turn
  • Maintain and extend the current API offering for both client needs and Turn’s own front-end requirements
  • Maintain the CI/CD pipeline as the product grows ensuring low friction deployments to our QA and production environments
  • Commit to test-driven software development methodologies wherever applicable.
  • Work well within a small, multi-skilled team in order to produce a world class product

While the bulk of our team and clients work in GMT +/- 4 hours, Turn is a global team working remotely and asynchronously. We are expanding our timezones and are open to talking to candidates further afield.
